WINNING a Commonwealth Games gold medal is the highlight of Kerryn McCann's career as a marathon runner, but it doesn't compare to the miracle of childbirth.

McCann, 36, gave birth to her second child, a healthy baby girl, on Saturday at Illawarra Private Hospital.

The timing was perfect with Josie Judith McCann arriving on the date she was due and weighing about 3kg.

It was a day McCann's family had been waiting a long time to see.

After giving birth to her son Benton six years ago, the Coledale mum decided to focus on running and put plans for more children on hold.

``Everyone is over the moon," she said.

``When you keep putting it off for so long, they are just happy to see it happen.

``I delayed having another child after Benton and I kept thinking I would just do one more race ... then one more after that.

``But I don't think I waited too long."

Her husband Greg said there were similarities in watching McCann win a gold medal and giving birth.

``Both were really nerve-racking because both things are out of my hands. But you just can't compare the two things. This is far more exciting. Being there during the birth is like nothing else I could imagine."

The couple said if they had another baby they would not be waiting six years this time.

And McCann did not rule out a comeback on the track.

``I will start running again and see what happens. I have to play it by ear, day by day, which is what I did after I had Benton."
